In Europe, there are quite a few religious holidays. In May, our kids had a few days off of school to celebrate Ascension Day. Following some advice we got from friends, we decided to head to Southern France for our vacation. Our first stop: Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.

It is located a couple hours west of Marseilles in the Camargue, which is the largest river delta in Western Europe (information I know you were just dying for). The area is famous for it's white horses, bulls, and surprisingly, flamingos. What we didn't realize was the weekend we were planning on being there coincided with an annual gypsy pilgrimage. Yikes! It was a little bit crazy with all of the campers and RVs taking over the village. I didn't take a lot of pictures of the town (because of all the gypsies) but if you want to get an idea of where we went you can click here.

While we were waiting for my sister April and her family to arrive, we took some time to get acquainted with the town. Of course we had to sample the ice cream as it was really hot out.

The church had a rampart walk around the tower which served as a lookout if the city was under attack by pirates

Behind the kids you can see the tower of the Church of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer

Although it is really gross, I couldn't pass on posting this picture.
In case you can't read it is says "WC for dogs".
I'd hate to have the town job of cleaning out that toilet.
