My sister-in-law Jane has lived abroad for years-once in Taiwan and once in China. Over those years she has flown numerous times with her kids. The last and final time she made the 14+ hour trip, she had five kids (ranging in age from 2 years to 14 years) AND she was 8 months pregnant! Oh and did I mention that she has always made the whole thing look easy?
Our flight to the US wasn't as bad as I imagined it would be. Alex watched Shrek almost 3 times, Ruby colored for probably 4 or 5 hours and Henry really only cried toward the end when he really started getting tired. No, it definitely wasn't the flying that was the problem. It was getting our kids over jetlag and the 9 hour time difference between Switzerland and California.
Props to Jane

We started our first day off early. The kids were all officially awake by 2:15 am and there was nothing we could do about it. I was shocked because by the time they went to bed on Sunday night, they had been awake for nearly 21 hours. With a little benadryl in their system I thought they would be semi-unconcious. Not the case. Luckily we are blessed with amazing friends who had given us free reign of their house (and their cars) while they were out of town. It was like staying in a gigantic hotel-minus the shower caps. Our kids were able to play and be loud without disturbing anyone else and when the time was right, Pete made a run for some breakfast. I promise you that an egg mcmuffin had never tasted so good.
Henry looking amazingly alert after sleeping only 11 out of 36 hours
